Face Framing

A lot of people ask me for advice on how to cut their bangs.

Before doing any cutting, we need to do a consultation. Assess condition of your curls, how they respond to frizz, and the bulk and the design of the style as they currently are. All of these elements of the style – both the condition of the hair, and the actual day-to-day style – have a role to play in how to cut and style bangs.

Let's start off with face framing, and how curls best frame your face. The bang area is the most important part of the hairstyle. It’s like the curtain on a stage – it’s the first thing that people notice. The bang area, being front and centre, is where individual curls and curl patterns must be taken into account. Never stretch the hair down, then cut your bangs - this is guesswork and you will hate the result. To cut the bangs, begin by styling your hair as best as you can, and controlling the frizz and curls. Curl Keeper Original® will control your curls without adding weight. Allow your bangs to hang over your face the way gravity lets them fall.

When your hair starts to dry, focus on the individual ringlets that shape your face – and if you’re cutting your bangs, cut each curl individually. Don’t chop them all off in one go! The reason you want to go curl by curl is that you want to allow for shrinkage. A curl needs to wrap around itself two and half times in order to make a ringlet, so by going slowly in your bang area, you can gauge how long or short each curl needs to be to frame your face perfectly.

An important thing to remember is that curly hair depends on the weather much more than straight hair, and humidity affects the curl of the day – every day. Test the length before you make your first cut to make sure that when pulled back, the bang can fit in a ponytail or behind your ear – however you normally style your bangs! Make sure they’re workable with what you do naturally.

Going slowly, making sure to pay attention to how each individual curl falls, and letting your bangs hang naturally to see how they style, are all incredibly important for cutting and styling curly bangs. Treat your bangs patiently and nicely, and they’ll reward you with an awesome style that will frame your face, and make you feel incredibly glamorous!
